Know What An Algae Bloom Looks Like

In late summer, any lake in New York can grow a harmful algal bloom — a scum or discoloration on the surface, often like pea soup or spilled paint. Dogs are the ones who get sick, because they run straight in and then lick their coats. Veterinary advisories say cases peak in August and September. If the water looks wrong, keep the dog out, rinse them with clean water if they went in, and call a vet if they vomit or turn wobbly.

Pack These

  • A six-foot leash, not a retractable one. State parks cap leash length at six feet.
  • Proof of rabies vaccination. Park staff can ask for it. A photo on your phone is the easy way.
  • A towel for the dock. The lake bottom is shale, so check their pads after a long swim.
  • Something orange in the fall. Hunting is allowed in the national forest in autumn.

Before You Drive Anywhere

Every place here was checked, and each one says where the information came from and when. Most come from the business’s own website or the agency that runs the park; where only a third party vouches for a place, we say so. Policies change, especially on busy summer weekends, so a quick call is never wasted. If you find something out of date, tell us and we will fix it.

Then Home To The Dock.

A waterfront cottage on Seneca Lake that takes up to two dogs, with the shoreline and the dock theirs as much as yours.
