Open Seneca Lake water in deep teal and green under a blue sky with scattered cloud, the wooded east shore running across the upper third.

Where The Dog Can Walk. And The One Place It Can’t.

The first thing to know: dogs are not allowed on the Gorge Trail at Watkins Glen State Park, the famous one with the waterfalls. People find this out at the entrance every summer.

The good news is that the rim trails above the gorge do allow dogs, and there is plenty of other good walking within half an hour of the cottage.

Trails

Nearest first. Every state park here follows the same rule: a leash no longer than six feet, and at most two pets.

  • Watkins Glen State Park — The Rim Trails

Watkins Glen · Under Ten Minutes

The famous gorge is off limits to dogs. The two rim trails above it are not, and they look down into the same gorge. The North Rim is 1.1 miles and the South Rim is 1.8.

    • No pets on the Gorge Trail — this is the rule that catches people
    • Leash no longer than six feet
    • Maximum two pets
    • Not in buildings, playgrounds or on guarded beaches
    • Carry proof of rabies vaccination — staff may ask

  • Catharine Valley Trail

Watkins Glen to Montour Falls and beyond · Under Ten Minutes

A flat stone-dust rail trail running south from Watkins Glen State Park. Thirteen miles open, and you only need to do as much of it as the dog wants.

    • Leash no longer than six feet
    • Maximum two pets
    • North entrance at Watkins Glen State Park; parking also south of Montour Falls on S Genesee Street

  • Interloken Trail, Finger Lakes National Forest

Hector · on the ridge above the lake · Half An Hour Or So

Twelve miles of woods and open pasture up the spine of the only national forest in New York, with views west over Seneca. Rarely busy. Do a loop, not the whole thing.

    • Dogs restrained or leashed on trails
    • Not allowed in swimming areas
    • Cattle graze the pastures in summer — close gates behind you and keep the dog close
    • Wet in spring and fall
    • Autumn is hunting season in the forest — blaze orange for you and the dog
    • Hector Ranger Station: (607) 546-4470

  • Taughannock Falls State Park

Trumansburg · on Cayuga Lake · Worth The Drive

One of the tallest single-drop falls in the east, over on Cayuga. Unlike Watkins Glen, the park rules do not keep dogs off its trails, which makes it the waterfall walk you can do together.

    • Leash no longer than six feet
    • Maximum two pets
    • Not in buildings, playgrounds, on boardwalks or guarded beaches
    • Carry proof of rabies vaccination

Somewhere To Swim

State parks keep dogs off their guarded beaches, and the national forest keeps them out of its swimming areas. This town park is the exception, just up the road. Or skip the drive: at the cottage the shoreline and the dock are the dog’s too.

  • Smith Memorial Park

Hector · east side · Under Ten Minutes

The town park on the shore, and the one public place nearby where a dog can actually get in the lake. Free to park and walk in.

    • Dogs may swim along the lakefront, but not hang out on the swim beach itself
    • Leashed, and never left unattended
    • No charge for parking or visiting
    • Open year-round while the roads are passable

Before You Drive Anywhere

Every place here was checked, and each one says where the information came from and when. Most come from the business’s own website or the agency that runs the park; where only a third party vouches for a place, we say so. Policies change, especially on busy summer weekends, so a quick call is never wasted. If you find something out of date, tell us and we will fix it.

Then Home To The Dock.

A waterfront cottage on Seneca Lake that takes up to two dogs, with the shoreline and the dock theirs as much as yours.
